What Dictionary Does This Use?
This checker uses ENABLE (Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon), a public-domain general English word list. It contains over 170,000 entries and powers Unscramble Wizard's word-generation tools.
An ENABLE result is a membership check, not an official Scrabble, Words With Friends, Crossplay, or Wordle ruling. Each game maintains its own accepted-word list, so verify a disputed play in the game or its current official dictionary.
Why Is My Word Not in the Dictionary?
A missing result only means the spelling is not present in ENABLE. Common reasons include:
- Proper nouns: Names of people, places, and brands (e.g., "Google", "Paris").
- Abbreviations: Shortened forms like "Dr." or "etc."
- Hyphenated words: Most hyphenated compounds are not accepted.
- Very new words: Dictionary updates lag behind everyday language use.
- Different editorial choices: Game dictionaries and general word lists do not contain identical entries.
A word absent from ENABLE can still be ordinary English or accepted by a particular game, and a word present in ENABLE can still be rejected by a game.
How Scrabble and WWF Scores Are Calculated
Each letter has a face-value point score. The scores shown here are the sum of all tile values in the word — they do not include board multipliers. On an actual board, landing on Double/Triple Letter or Double/Triple Word squares can dramatically increase the score.
